The maidenhair fern looks so delicate, yet it is hardy and adaptable. The black stems hold the fronds up making a statement on a slope. This native plant likes a more neutral pH, so adding a little lime is helpful.
Christmas fern is also native and evergreen. The clumps of deep leathery green stay fresh all winter. Cinnamon fern named for the upright spikes of bright cinnamon-color fertile fronds can grow 3-5 feet tall, quite a specimen in the woodland garden.
The show stopper of the Lady Fern genus is the Japanese Painted fern. The silver, pink, and burgundy fronds create a wonderful effect in the shade garden.
The Broad Beech fern is a fast-growing ground cover that adds unity as it runs through and along the path. The natural look that is achieved by using ferns makes even the beginner look masterful.
